Lost and Found Pets

Animal Friends Humane Society houses stray dogs picked up by the County Dog Wardens, stray dogs and cats picked up by the Animal Control Officers from the various cities in Butler County and stray dogs and cats picked up by members of the public.

Tips

  1. If you are missing an animal, don't delay. Please visit our shelter in person. Due to the number of animals that are admitted to our facility each day and the fact that they are brought to us from so many locations, it is not possible to make a positive I.D. over the phone.
  2. If you are not able to come to the Shelter yourself, send a relative or friend who can identify the animal in order that it can be held for you to reclaim. Continue to visit the Shelter every other day while your pet is lost.
  3. If you have a current picture of your pet, bring it with you. We will post it in our receiving area for 30 days.
  4. If you live in one of the cities, contact your animal control officer:
    • Middletown: 425-7700
    • Fairfield: 639-7820
    • Hamilton: 785-7080
    • Oxford: 523-6321
  5. Contact your local paper (many provide a free service for lost and found animals).
    • Hamilton Journal News: 513-863-8222
    • Middletown Journal News: 513-420-0097
    • Cincinnati Enquirer: 513-421-6300
    • Oxford Press: 513-523-4139

The Law

State law requires that dogs not wearing a current license tag be held for 72 hours to give the owner chance to reclaim the animal. Dogs that are wearing a current license must be held for a period up to 14 days. Our staff will attempt to contact, by phone, or certified mail to the last known address, the owner as listed on the license registration. Animals entering our shelter are also scanned for microchips. If a micro chip is detected, the owner is contacted.

It is important to keep all identification current so you can be reached as soon as your animal is found.

There is no state law allowing for a holding period for cats.
