Moose & Diana

A Different Ending for Moose & Diana

When two wolfdog hybrids were found abandoned outside a property in Fairfield Township, our team knew the road ahead would not be simple.

The dogs, now named Moose and Diana, arrived at Animal Friends frightened, stressed, and in need of specialized care. Wolfdog hybrids present unique challenges in animal welfare due to behavioral needs, housing requirements, and varying ownership laws across states and municipalities.

But this story is not just about Moose and Diana.

It’s also about how partnerships, compassion, and community support can completely change an animal’s future.

Several years ago, our shelter cared for another pair of hybrid dogs, Maci and Kiri. Despite exhausting every possible option and reaching out to rescues across the country, placement opportunities simply did not exist at the time. It was a heartbreaking reminder of how limited resources can impact animals with specialized needs. And that experience stayed with our team.

When Moose and Diana arrived at our shelter, staff immediately began working to create a different outcome.

Our veterinary team provided full medical care, including vaccines, bloodwork, spay/neuter surgeries, and microchips. Staff worked patiently to help both dogs decompress and feel safe, especially Moose, who arrived with extremely high fear and anxiety levels.

At the same time, an incredible partnership was forming behind the scenes. Thanks to the dedication of one of our employees and the compassionate team at Red Riding Hood Rescue Project, a collaborative rescue effort quickly came together to prepare for Moose and Diana’s transfer to specialized care.

Their team has worked tirelessly to prepare secure enclosures and resources specifically designed for wolfdog hybrids — something most shelters simply are not equipped to provide long term.

Because of this partnership, Moose and Diana now have the opportunity so many hybrid dogs never receive: safety, specialized care, and a future.

This story is a reminder that animal welfare is never a solo effort. Outcomes like this only happen through collaboration between shelters, rescues, veterinary teams, volunteers, and compassionate supporters in our community.

Every donation helps make stories like Moose and Diana’s possible by funding medical care, enrichment, transport, staffing, and lifesaving partnerships.

Together, we can continue creating more second chances. Your support is instrumental in helping animals in our community. Thank you for your continued support.
